Finally, Some Freedom
So today we finally had a chance to get out to the dog park, which is great after Sammy got into that whole loaf of bread… Time to burn calories, pup! It was just us for the first half hour, so we played a little bit of fetch. Then Luna, a nearly one year old female Husky came along to play. Luna plays a little rough with the dogs at the park, but she’s doing better and better with “manners” every time I see her. She and Sammy got into it a couple of times, but we were quick to stop the behavior before it spun out of control. Before long, Luna figured out what Sammy liked and what she didn’t like. Then along came Scrappy, a little unaltered Miniature Pinscher. Usually Scrappy is stuck in the small dog area, but his owner let him into the big dog area where Luna and Sammy were playing. At first, he was a good play pal. But then he decided to get a little frisky with the ladies, and no one really wants to watch a little male dog hump faces… Yeah, that’s right, he doesn’t even know how to mount from behind. He just goes straight for the face (gross). Poor little Scrappy had to be separated into the little dog area after all!
Then as Luna was leaving the park, our greatest pal arrived! Miss Layla and her owner! Today was extra special, too, because I actually got to pet Layla for the first time! It was awesome!!! If any of you remember this video of Layla and Sammy at the park, you’ll remember her rescue story and that she is absolutely does not trust people other than the woman who rescued her and has gained her trust. I would love to be one of those people who gains her trust, so today when her owner said I could pet her, I wondered if approaching her against her Will would make her not trust me. She seemed calm enough, but I still approached very slowly and held my hand out as far as I could. I also kept my gaze away from hers so that it didn’t seem like I was staring at her. I let her sniff me first, and then patted her a bit on the side of her long Shepherd face. I made it pretty brief and then stepped away slowly. She kinda looked at me for a minute, and then ran off to play with Sammy. Her owner said that Sammy was one of the best dogs for Layla because they played the best together at the park. This made me really happy, because they are definitely a blast to watch at the park whenever they get to play with each other.
